WARSTEEL + EJECUTADOR + PISS ON CHRIST + ANCESTOR OF KAOS

11 years have passed since ANCESTOR OF KAOS, AGONIZER, ESCAPE and Scriptorium magazine took the flight to freedom from Cuba to Miami. There have been many challenges, good and bad times, and so many stones in the way to achieve the goals. We all left our loved ones behind to embark on the path to family prosperity. A lot has happened in these 11 years. Some bands remained for a while, others were absorbed by the day-to-day struggle and Scriptorium hibernated for seven long years. ANCESTOR OF KAOS returned to Miami after 8 years and Scriptorium’s printed copies were available at a show for the first time. This show was very special, it was a nostalgic reunion with old friends, and it was an ode to perseverance. It was an example of how hard you must fight for your dreams and how much you must sacrifice to succeed.

Miami is that other side of Cuba that slaps totalitarianism in the face as a political system. A city that reminds the free world that there has been a dictatorship in Cuba for more than 60 years. Miami is a city that evokes many feelings, and running into and hugging old friends from the island becomes an indescribable pleasure. Miami is a place that shows us what freedom tastes like.

The concert took place at the Gramps Club, but to my surprise, it would be in the inside room and not on the outside stage. The first band to open the night was WARSTEEL. The fact that the show was hosted in a smaller room made it more intimate. In Shirley's room, the band-audience interaction becomes more striking; everyone is so close to each other, like a part of the same boxing ring. Orlando, FL’s three-piece, moves along many paths, something typical in bands that start and flirt with various styles before defining themselves. At first glance, it seems like a Punk band, where more styles like Thrash, Black and even some Hardcore come together. It is very interesting to see how young guys are inclined to revive or embrace these styles. They sounded very convincing and will be a band to follow closely, especially its evolution and upcoming releases.

EJECUTADOR was the second band to take the stage and where Jorge “Hellfire” (vocals of ANCESTOR OF KAOS), played the role of bassist. Miami's four-piece has been formed for a short time also, although its members have been playing with other bands for some time, so they are not beginners on the scene. Stalking the Kill is a five-song EP that they released last year and is available in physical formats and digital platforms. Their music is very attractive because although they perform Death Thrash metal as the main course, they insist on adorning and enriching the music with segments that sound Heavy or Rock and Roll, in the dirtiest MOTORHEAD style, and they include some punky riffs that describe them as lovers of this style. This act was undoubtedly much appreciated that night, and it comforts me a lot that there’s a band of this caliber in Miami growing up.

PISS ON CHRIST is one of those bands that emanates anti-Christianity, and its founding member Dan Castro (guitarist and vocalist) has taken old school Death metal as a stylistic vehicle to express all his opposition to religion. In my opinion, it is one of the bands that surprised me the most musically. The current three-piece sounds very suggestive although the vocals deserve more work. They carry a wealth of influences from the 90's Floridian Death metal of and flirt with the most primitive Black, but there is an inclination to leave their own mark. The attendees were pretty much motivated by their darkness and were very pleased with the setlist that night.

ANCESTOR OF KAOS’ resurrection began with the re-recording of the Hell Fuckin' Metal album, and I am the Truth’s songs to announce the new chapter. The self-titled album came out last year independently, with a better sound and Victor “Mr Hyde” said goodbye to the band after this recording session. His place was taken by Jorge “Hellfire” who played bass with the band in some shows before. It has been eight years since everyone saw the band live. The show at Gramps was a good opportunity to review some classics and introduce new songs that, according to Yando, ESCAPE’s vocalist: “…. the new songs are badass….”. I'm sure they will make the next album very successful and hopefully will get a contract with a record company to take them to the place they deserve. The small room was packed and there was no room for a pin. Everyone supported the band from start to finish, as if they had been waiting for them for so long. It felt special that night, and I think it was worth seeing what this band has become over these years, and how much support and admiration they receive from the scene that welcomed them in those first years in the USA.

Miami is a very artistic and diverse city where metal is not the favorite genre, but it was very pleasant to see that there are places that continue to support metal. Only by everyone working together (clubs, bands, public and promoters) will be able to build a scene in the state where the sun shines brightest, but not for metal music. There were many absentees to the feast, but it was very comforting to catch up with old friends and all-time acquaintances from venues like El Patio de Maria, La Madriguera, El Mejunge, El Caligari and from many Cultural Community centers all over Cuba. 11 años han pasado desde que ANCESTOR OF CHAOS, AGONIZER, ESCAPE y Scriptorium magazine tomaron el vuelo de la libertad desde cuba hacia miami. Muchos han sido los retos, los buenos y malos ratos, las vicisitudes tratando de lograr las metas. Todos dejamos nuestros seres queridos atrás para emprender el camino de la prosperidad familiar. Mucho ha pasado en estos 11 años, Algunas bandas se mantuvieron por un tiempo, otras fueron absorbidas por el subsistir del día a día y Scriptorium hibernó por 7 años. ANCESTOR OF KAOS se presenta en Miami después de 8 años y Scriptorium se deja ver en físico por primera vez. Este concierto es muy especial, es un reencuentro con la nostalgia y amigos de siempre y es una oda a la perseverancia. Es una muestra de cuán duro debes luchar por tus sueños y de cuánto debes sacrificar para alcanzarlos.

Miami es esa otra parte de Cuba que abofetea al totalitarismo como sistema político, y es esa ciudad que le grita al mundo que en Cuba hay una dictadura por más de 60 años. Miami es una ciudad que evoca muchos sentimientos, donde sobre todo reencontrar y abrazar viejos amigos de la isla se convierte en un placer indescriptible. Miami es ese sitio que nos recuerda el sabor de la libertad.

El concierto se llevaría a cabo en el club Gramps, pero para sorpresa mía, sería en la sala interior y no en el escenario de afuera. La primera banda para abrir la noche fue WARSTEEL. El hecho de que el concierto se diera en una sala más pequeña hacía que se tornará más intimista. En la sala Shirley, la interacción banda-público se torna más especial, todos están muy cerca y son parte del mismo cuadrilátero de boxeo. El trío de Orlando, FL, se mueve por muchos caminos, algo típico en las bandas que comienzan y coquetean con varios estilos antes de definirse. A primera vista parece una banda de Punk, donde confluyen más estilos como el Thrash, el Black y hasta algo de Hardcore. Es muy interesante ver como muchachos jóvenes se inclinan por revivir o abrazar estos estilos. Suenan muy convincentes y será una agrupación para seguir de cerca, sobre todo su evolución y próximos lanzamientos.

EJECUTADOR fue la segunda banda en subir al escenario y donde Jorge “Hellfire” (vocal de ANCESTOR OF KAOS), cumple el rol de bajista. El cuarteto Miamense también lleva poco tiempo de formado, aunque sus miembros llevan tiempo tocando con otras bandas, por lo que no son neófitos en la escena. Stalking the Kill es un EP de cinco temas que sacaron el año pasado y que está disponible en físico y en las plataformas digitales. Es muy atractiva su propuesta porque, aunque ejecutan un Death/Thrash metal como plato fuerte, insisten en adornar y enriquecer su música con segmentos que suenan Heavy o Rockandrolleros al más sucio estilo de MOTORHEAD, y también se le escapan riffs punkies que los delatan como amantes de este estilo. Esta agrupación sin dudas fue muy apreciada esa noche y me reconforta mucho que Miami tiene una banda de este calibre en creciente desarrollo,

PISS ON CHRIST es una de esas bandas que derrocha anticristianismo y su miembro fundador Dan Castro (guitarrista y vocal) ha tomado el Death metal de la vieja escuela como vehículo estilístico para expresar toda su oposición a la religión. En mi opinión, es una de las bandas que más me sorprendió musicalmente. El actual trío suena muy sugerente, aunque las vocales ameritan más trabajo. Cargan un cúmulo de influencias del Death Floridano de los 90 's y coquetean con el Black más primitivo, pero se siente una inclinación por dejar una huella propia. Los asistentes se dejaron llevar más por lo oscuro de la propuesta y se quedaron muy complacidos con el setlist de esa noche.

La resurrección de ANCESTOR OF KAOS comenzó con la regrabación de las canciones del disco Hell Fuckin’ Metal y de algunas del I am the Truth para anunciar el nuevo capítulo. El disco del mismo nombre salió el año pasado de manera independiente, con un mejor sonido y un Víctor “Mr. Hyde” que se despedía de la banda. Su lugar fue ocupado por Jorge “Hellfire” quien tocara bajo con la banda en algunos conciertos en el 2013. Para todos los presentes habían pasado 8 años desde que vimos a la banda en directo por última vez. El concierto en el Gramps sirvió para repasar algunos clásicos y presentar nuevas canciones que, a decir de Yando, vocal de ESCAPE: “…los nuevos temas están de pi….” seguro harán que el próximo disco sea muy exitoso y ojalá se logre algún contrato con una discográfica que pueda llevarlos al lugar donde se merecen. La pequeña sala estaba repleta y no cabía un alfiler. Todos apoyaron a la banda de principio a fin, como si los estuvieran esperando desde hace muchos años. Se sintió algo especial esa noche, y creo que fue valió la pena comprobar cuánto ha crecido esta banda, y cuanto apoyo y admiración recibe de la escena que los acogió en los primeros años en USA.

Miami es una ciudad muy diversa artísticamente donde el metal no tiene la preferencia, pero fue muy grato ver que hay lugares que siguen apostando por este género. Solo trabajando todos en conjunto (clubs, bandas, público y promotores) podrán levantar una escena en el estado donde más brilla el sol. Faltaron muchos comensales al festín, pero fue muy reconfortante ver viejas amistades y conocidos de siempre, del Patio de Maria, de la Madriguera, del Mejunje, del Caligari y de muchas casas del Joven creador en diferentes provincias de Cuba. No se olviden de las raíces, de donde venimos y cuiden la pincha! Un abrazo
