The album Unburied Corpse from 2022 was a recording that hooked me since the first song and made me dig deeper into this West Texas band called FLESHROT. They have a steady lineup and are more concise than ever. About this and more inside info from founder, guitarist and vocalist Phil Graham. Scriptorium Magazine readers, don't miss the opportunity to dive into one of the Texan Death metal bands that I'm sure will be talked about over time.

I really enjoy discovering new extreme bands every day. Are you guys from Lubbock mainly? How’s metal making its way on the west Texan side? "... Yeah, the band started out in Lubbock but I’m in Fort Worth now. Currently there are some really good metal and hardcore bands popping up from there though. Check out Dread, Aneurysm and Tiger Splitter..."

Flesh rot could be used in a metaphorical way as reference for moral decay. Is your moniker more related to this or just to the human tissue to decompose? "... A bit of both maybe. For me, the name came from the SEPULTURA song "Nomad". The lyrics “Your world will be extinct, and your flesh will rot with mine”, specifically..."

FLESHROT

I do believe that Unburied Corpse from 2022 was quite a debut album. Did you feel like the album opened doors and  opportunities for the band? ";... Yeah, I think the reception has been sick! We’ve toured and have been lucky enough to play with some of our friends and favorite bands since then. We aren’t a full-time touring band so the things we’ve done have been very special..."

2024 was a year with major lineup changes within the band. Can you expand on it? Is Trey Pemberton (gtr in CREEPING DEATH) your new drummer? Is he a full-time member?  "... Yes, Trey is our new drummer and a permanent member. He’s been in the band along with the other two new members, Matt Thompson(guitars) and Jordan Hemphill(bass) for about a year and a half now. It’s been a great fit so far and I really feel like this is the tightest we’ve been as a band. It was never a plan to move to Fort Worth and regroup but my wife and I went through terrible loss of a child and no longer wanted to stay in Lubbock. After moving here, we realized pretty quickly it would be difficult to continue the band in that way with the line up at the time. Rather than break up, I felt like I had more to give to this and made the difficult decision to move forward with new members..."

I have read that you have been working on new songs. Will there be any sophomore album soon? "... Hopefully soon, yes. More than likely a smaller release beforehand and then a new LP..."

I must admit that I am hooked on Unburied Corpse. It got me since I listened to the first song, but I am worried about the second album as the lineup is completely renewed. What will be coming ahead still resemble some of the debut album? "... I’ve always written everything for FLESHROT and have always carried the vision forward. There will be a difference because of the new line up but as a whole it will still be FLESHROT. What is already written is by far our best material and I’m excited for people to hear it..."

If you are given the power to abolish one of the deadly diseases that affects humankind which you choose? "... Cancer..."

The band recently announced your participation in the Kill-Town Death Fest in Copenhagen, Denmark. How were you guys featured? Would it be just a one-time run or more dates will be revealed? "... Yes, we’re excited to play in Europe for the first time. Unfortunately, this time around it will just be a one show, but we hope to make it back over again soon after..."

What are some plans and ideas that the band would like to develop in the upcoming months? "... We’re just going to continue writing, recording and preparing new music. We’re beginning rehearsals for recording soon and then we’ll begin the recording process..."

Any other goals or messages for the band followers and the Scriptorium Magazine readers. "... Thank you for the interview and thank you if you read through all of this! Thank you to everyone who has supported us in any way..."

My fellow metalheads, let’s continue doing what we know best. Let’s keep those fists up in the air and our metal scene alive.  Let’s lift it up together as one, like that DEATH’s song because we all are all of the same blood like KREATOR stated in “Violent Revolution”. Let’s always remember that we are all bonded by blood and by metal music. Beers up!
