NIGHT IN GALES The Black Stream (Apostasy Records/20223)

NIGHT IN GALES is one of those bands that was a beacon of savage melodies crafted in my teenage years and that I still remember with immense nostalgia. Towards the Twilight from 1997 was the first album I heard, and I've never been able to get it out of my head. The German band was in walked in slow motion after the release of the 2001 Necrodynamic. After that, they did not release a studio album until 2011 with Five Scars, although it has never been made official that the band has dissolved or stopped. The five-piece put out their most recent album titled "The Black Stream" last month, in September.
If you are one of those who have always been around NIGHT IN GALES’ career or you are one of those who came new to this story, my suggestion in both cases, is to go to the past and put the album Towards the Twilight in your music player. I confess to you that it’s what happened to me when I listened to the first songs of the new album, I had to go back in time. The Black Stream is a return to the past, it has a hidden feeling that doesn't have the last three albums of this modern era, although I would like to tell you that those ones are not bad albums at all. I am sure The Black Stream will become NIGHT IN GALES’ best record of the new age. It takes you back to the past but with freshness, innovation and with tremendous sound production handled by Dan Swano. This new album has more achievements than failures. Above all, it has a lot of hooks and punches in the first five songs, but it fades somewhat towards the end. In my opinion there were two songs that could be removed, but the Jens Basten (guitar) creative vortex would surely point out the opposite.

It breaks explosively with “Tears of Blood”, very ninety and time-travelling, followed by “Gone Forever” which is pure melody, slower and swingy, “Transition to Doom” is more uplifting, with “Final Place” they resume aggressiveness, “Laughter of Madness” is a proof that they can be intense and melancholic at the same time, “The Black Stream” announces that it has a quite experimental intro and more brilliant on a guitar level, I would have left out “The Consciousless”, and they continue to rock with “Return to Chaos”, and out of the last three remaining ones, I choose “The Eternal Fall”; but all this is a reflection of my subjectivity, you can have a different opinion.

However, I will not stop recommending this album and this German act. It is very rewarding to know that they are still true to the style that brought them to life in the first place. NIGHT IN GALES’ most recent album is a showcase of old-fashioned melodic Death metal, something very necessary these days, and without clean singings. This has been an underrated band after they left Nuclear Blast’s nest. The last three albums have been licensed by Apostasy Records, so their distribution is more limited. You should go to the label's website and get your copy. There you go, melodic Death metal diehards, here you have what many of you have been waiting for. 9.5/10

NIGHT IN GALES es una de esas bandas que me han acompañado desde la adolescencia y que todavía recuerdo con gran añoranza. “Towards the Twilight” de 1997 fue el primer disco que escuché de ellos y nunca he podido sacarlo de mi cabeza. La banda alemana tuvo un impás en su carrera después de la salida del disco “Necrodynamic” del 2001 y después no editaron un disco de estudio hasta el 2011 con "Five Scars", aunque nunca se hizo oficial que la banda se haya disuelto o parado. En el pasado mes de septiembre sacaron el más reciente álbum titulado "The Black Stream". Si eres de los que siempre estuvo al tanto de la carrera de NIGHT IN GALES o de los que llega nuevo a esta historia, mi sugerencia en los dos casos es ir al pasado y poner en tu reproductor el disco "Towards the Twilight" y después sigan deleitándote con “The Black Stream”.

Les confieso que eso fue lo que me pasó cuando me dispuse a escuchar el nuevo disco. “The Black Stream” es un regreso al pasado, tiene un sentimiento oculto que no tienen los restantes discos de la era moderna, aunque déjenme decirles que los últimos tres discos no han estado mal. “The Black Stream” estoy seguro de que será uno de los mejores discos del grupo alemán en la etapa actual. Te lleva al pasado, pero con frescura e innovación y con una tremenda producción de sonido de la mano de Dan Swano. Este nuevo disco tiene más aciertos que desaciertos, sobre todo tiene mucho gancho y pegada en las primeras cinco canciones y un tanto se va diluyendo para el final. En mi opinión sobraron dos temas, pero el torbellino creativo de Jens Basten (guitar) seguro apuntaría lo contrario.

Rompe explosivo con “Tears of Blood”, muy noventero y teletransportador, le sigue “Gone Forever” que es melodía pura, más pausado y cadencioso, “Transition to Doom” es más arribista, con “Final Place” retoman la agresividad, “Laughter of Madness” es la prueba q pueden ser intensos y melancólicos, “The Black Stream” anuncia una intro bastante experimental y más lucimiento a nivel guitarrístico, yo hubiera dejado afuera “The Consciousless”, y siguen metiendo caña con “Return to Chaos” y de las últimas tres restantes me quedo con “The Eternal Fall”, pero todo esto es reflejo de mi subjetividad, tú puedes tener otra apreciación.

Sin embargo, no dejaré de recomendar este disco y esta agrupación. Es muy reconfortante saber que siguen aferrados al estilo que les dio vida en un inicio. El más reciente disco de NIGHT IN GALES es una clínica de Death melódico a la vieja usanza, algo muy necesario en estos días, y sin voces limpias. Esta ha sido una agrupación subvalorada después que salieron bajo del manto de Nuclear Blast. Desde hace tres discos andan licenciados por Apostasy Records, por lo que su distribución es más limitada. Deben ir al sitio web del sello y conseguir su copia. Ya saben, acérrimos del Death melódico, aquí tienen lo que muchos estaban esperando. 9.5/10
