What I like most about this subterranean culture is that we are in contact with new bands and others not so new as is the case of the Brazilian ROTTEN FILTHY, but because of insufficient promotion or geographic determinism, are not better known internationally. Guilherme Machine, the drummer, tells us the details of the formation and where they come from: “.... We are from Cachoeira do Sul - Brazil in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. There are beautiful landscapes in my town, there is the Jacui river and old and beautiful churches, a bridge built in 1848, and a wonderful monument called Chateau D'eau too. If you ever visit us, you can taste “churrasco gaucho“, which is a barbecue made under the embers and drink a “chimarrão”, an indigenous bitter tea. We are from the extreme south of Brazil, very close to Argentina and Uruguay, so we are called “gauchos” ...”

This Brazilian Death/Thrash act was formed in 2009 and from the first songs it could be noticed that their idols SEPULTURA were among their great sources of inspiration. As the years went by and the albums were released, they were detaching from their influences and leaning more on their own path but about all this Guilherme refers to the following: “.... I believe that is a genre in which you can express your most visceral and raw emotions with authenticity. There are no rules in death metal so you can put your heart on the songs and write about everything you want. We were inspired by old SEPULTURA, SLAYER, KREATOR, TESTAMENT, ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER and DEATH inspired us to form a band, we just want to play songs like the bands we love to listen to. After this time, we discovered new inspiring bands like Lamb of God then we added these influences on our songs and way of composition too. We feel lucky to have these guys who are doing awesome music in our metal scene, please listen to them! There’s a lot of bands doing great things! I can say a lot about REBAELLIUN, FINITA, VAKAN, PACTA CORVINA, HUMAN PLAGUE, NAMELESS GODS, INFORTUNO, HARMONY FAULT, DEADTRACK, and LITOSTH…”

The new Apotheosis EP will be released on March 20th. ROTTEN FILTHY will also be introducing a new line-up as only Guilherme Machine, the drummer, remains as an original member. What will drive him to continue to write songs and keep the band alive? This and other questions about the details of the EP recording are answered in the following lines: “... The band had another lineup when we started to play, but this current lineup, I gathered the guys who I already knew from other bands. The new lineup has the same purpose of the early days: to play a mix of punchy Thrash and Death metal with lyrics talking about spirituality, neopaganism, Brazilian Afro religions and occultism. The guys loved the idea because they already knew ROTTEN FILTHY and our old songs, so it was easy and nice to bring these guys to rebuild the band. I’m a practitioner of neopagan cults. Since African and Brazilian cults, Egyptian religions and witchcraft, I think that is a very interesting theme to write about because it is a way of protesting against the hegemony of monotheistic religions…”

“... When we were composing the new EP, Guilherme remembered, I met Marcos in his home studio to create new things every week. If we listen to something that has already been created, we change some stuff if we need to. When everything was finished, we sent it to the other guys to show them and listen to their opinions. After that they put vocals and bass in the demos until we make the recording in a real studio…”

After two albums, several years of trajectory and lineup changes, it seems that 2025 is going to be a very important year. They will soon release Apotheosis, and they have more in mind for the rest of the year. Scriptorium Magazine readers, Brazil is an exotic country and from time to time it surprises us in terms of metal bands. Don't forget to check this one out and the new release. From here we remain pending, and we leave you with the words of its drummer and founder Guilherme: “.... I just want to thank you guys for the support, and if you liked it and were interested in ROTTEN FILTHY, please follow and support us on our channels! We have a lot of music and truth to show you! We have only two dreams: find a good label to support us, because we love to compose and release EP’s and albums, and we would love to play shows on a beautiful European summer tour in festivals and venues. We hope to fulfill these dreams.  After we release Apotheosis, we will finish the next EP, then we will do some live shows in May to support the new songs. After that we will record our new songs and find a label to release them. We hope to sell a lot of merchandise too. Cheers from Brazil! Rodrigo Sinluz (vocals), Marcos Klein (guitar), Alencar Fardin (bass) and Guilherme Machine (drums)...”

My fellow metalheads, let’s continue doing what we know best. Let’s keep those fists up in the air and our metal scene alive.  Let’s lift it up together as one, like that DEATH’s song because we all are all of the same blood like KREATOR stated in “Violent Revolution”. Let’s always remember that we are all bonded by blood and by metal music. Beers up!

Alex Sanchez
